You are introduced to Luna and she's already in poor spirits because she thinks nopony appreciates her night. She comes to Princess Celestia about this and the elder sister tries to reason with her but she won't listen. The anger becomes too much and Luna begins to turn against her sister subsequently becoming Nightmare Moon. With a heavy heart, Celestia banishes Luna to the moon. Now a thousand years later Nightmare Moon is plotting to escape her lunar prison but has a nostalgic flashback as to how things were before her transformation.
